I am a member of the Louisville Cartoonist Society and we are doing a holiday gift exchange/secret commission project which will be presented tonight at our holiday get together. Each person requested a piece of art to be created by another member based on a particular character, topic, or style. I was given “The Elongated Man.” I’d never seen the Elongated Man before. I’m honestly not too big on superhero comics, but the more I learned about this character the more fun I had with it. Who knows, maybe this could even inspire the start of some future superhero comic book I will make!
I decided to create my own editorial illustration based on a piece in this month’s “Organic Gardener” magazine about thinking about preparing for a spring garden during the winter months. The article already had a lovely illustration to accompany the text, but I decided to try to create a different style and concept. The more I worked on this drawing, the more I thought it would also illustrate the word “separated” (which happens to be this week’s Illustration Friday challenge.)
Here’s to embracing the upcoming winter months while looking forward to warmer days.
While trying to draw an self illustration about feeling stressed out, I ended up making a collage that looks a lot like a Julie Doucet drawing. Oops. I used an old magazine from the 70s and Van Dyke brown ink.
